New Book Justice and Divinity: An African-American Liturgy by Antoinette Ellis-Williams Fuses Poetry, Art, and Black Sacred Resistance
Newark, NJ – June 4, 2025 – Artist, poet, and scholar Dr. Antoinette Ellis-Williams announces the release of her powerful new book, Justice and Divinity: An African-American Liturgy, a compelling blend of poetry, visual art, and Black sacred tradition. Officially launched on June 4, 2025, this transformative work weaves together over 40 original artworks from her solo exhibition at Moody-Jones Gallery, creating a rich, immersive experience rooted in liberation, spirituality, and ancestral power.
Structured in eight liturgical chapters—complete with Refrains, a Requiem, and a Benediction—Justice and Divinity draws deeply from African American worship traditions to address racial injustice, honor ancestral resilience, and affirm Black survival and transcendence.
In a stirring foreword, Danny Simmons, renowned artist and co-founder of Def Poetry Jam, writes:
“This is a loud, far-reaching call for resilience, hope, and confrontation… a beacon for the gathering of the Tribes that stand ready with our art, our poetry.”
The book pays homage to icons such as James Baldwin, Nina Simone, Malcolm X, and bell hooks, while uplifting the everyday heroes whose names history may never record. At once a love letter and a war cry, Justice and Divinity invites readers into sacred dialogue—through word, image, and spirit.
